It is not uncommon for someone to put off a trip to see a doctor, especially a specialist like a gastroenterologist. However, there are a few times that you must seek the help of a professional at a specialist’s office like West Gastroenterology Medical Group. Below are some one the most common reasons people find themselves sitting in our exam rooms:dreamstime_xxl_19874267

Gallstones
If you are not familiar, gallstones are tiny, hard nuggets that are formed in the gallbladder. The severity of a gallstone can range from being smaller than a pea, to the size of a pingpong ball. Often people find that they either have several of the smaller stones or one of the larger stones. Gallstones cause very sudden pain in the right side of the body where the gallbladder is located and are often very disruptive to those who experience them. Treatment varies for each case depending on the severity. Some people have to undergo surgery while others are able to simply take prescription medication that dissolves the stones.

Celiac Disease
This disease is a genetic condition that is associated with the immune system as a whole. Those who suffer from Celiac Disease cannot ingest gluten, a protein found in rye, wheat and barley. When these people do ingest gluten, damage is made to their small intestine which causes a good amount of pain and often is accompanied by diarrhea. A Gastroenterologist can do a blood test to see if the disease is indeed what the patient is suffering from, as well as check their small intestine to see how much damage has already been done.
Lactose Intolerance
Often when people find that they are experiencing extreme symptoms after ingesting dairy products, they end up in our office. When someone is lactose intolerant, they are unable to break down the sugar found in dairy known as ‘lactose’. This causes them to experience a range of symptoms from stomach aches, to diarrhea, gas and bloating. Gastroenterologists can test for this condition and suggest treatments to their patients that often include dietary changes.

If you experience any of the symptom above, please call West Gastroenterology Medical group today to schedule an appointment. Don’t live another day with the pain and discomfort you have been experiencing.
