Colonoscopy Prep Instructions

Day Before the Procedure:

  • Take the checked (X) bowel prep solution below along with a clear liquid diet.
  • Start a clear liquid diet at 7AM THE DAY BEFORE THE PROCEDURE up to 12AM (midnight).
  • Drink a large amount of liquids to avoid dehydration.
  • Avoid red or orange colored liquids.
  • Avoid any food or drink that is solid, soft, pureed, pulp, or “milky.”
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages.
  • Nothing by mouth should be taken after 12AM (MIDNIGHT) the NIGHT BEFORE the procedure.

“Clear liquids” examples:

  • Clear broth or bouillon (without noodles or solids)
  • Clear: Soft Drinks, Kool-Aid, Gatorade, Lemonade
  • Popsicles (No ice cream or yogurt bars)
  • Tea (No milk or cream)
  • Jell-O (No red or orange)
  • Any juices without pulp (No orange juice)

Morning of Procedure:

  • Administer 2 fleet enemas.
  • Enemas can be purchased over the counter at any drug store.
  • Administer the first enema, wait 15 minutes, and repeat with the second enema.

Patients who take Aspirin or Anti-Coagulants:

  • Stop Aspirin or other non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications 7 days prior to the procedure.
  • Stop Coumadin (Warfarin) or Plavix (Clopidogrel) 7 days prior to the procedure.

Patients with Diabetes:

  • Consult with your primary doctor on how to modify diabetic medication or insulin injection.

On the Morning of Procedure Please Bring:

  1. Your current ID and insurance card.
  2. A list of your current medications, remedies, products, and allergies.
  3. A licensed driver to transport you to your home after the procedure. (Taxis are not allowed.)

_____ TRILYTE BOWEL PREP

Day Before the Procedure:

  • Start drinking the bowel prep solution named TRILYTE at 12pm (noon).
  • Trilyte comes in a 1-gallon bottle with powder inside. Fill up the container and shake well (refrigerate after mixing).
  • Drink 1 8oz glass of solution every 15 minutes until all prep solution is finished.
  • Keep drinking plenty of clear fluids until bedtime to prevent dehydration.
_____ HALF-LYTELY BOWEL PREP

Day Before the Procedure:

  • Start drinking the bowel prep solution named Half-lytely bowel prep at 12pm (noon).
  • The prep is a combination of pills and a liquid solution.

Follow the instructions below:

  • Step 1: Take all Bisacodyl tablets with water at 12pm (noon).
    • DO NOT chew or crush the tablets.
    • DO NOT take the tablets within 1 hour of taking an antacid.
  • Step 2: After a bowel movement occurs (usually in 1-6 hours), add lukewarm drinking water to top of the line on Half-lytely bottle.
    • Drink 1 8oz glass every 20 minutes until all prep solution is finished.
    • Even if no bowel movement occurs after 6 hours, begin to drink solution.
    • Keep drinking plenty of fluids until bedtime to prevent dehydration and weakness.
_____ MOVIPREP

Day Before the Procedure:

  • Start preparation at 12pm (noon).
  • Step 1: Empty 1 pouch A and 1 pouch B into disposable container.
    • Add lukewarm drinking water to the top line of container. Mix to dissolve.
    • The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 15 minutes, drink the solution down to the next mark, until the full liter is consumed.
    • Drink 8oz glasses of the clear liquid of your choice. This is a necessary step to ensure adequate hydration and effective prep.
  • Step 2: Start at 4:00pm
    • Repeat same instructions as Step 1.
