Colonoscopy Prep Instructions
Day Before the Procedure:
- Take the checked (X) bowel prep solution below along with a clear liquid diet.
- Start a clear liquid diet at 7AM THE DAY BEFORE THE PROCEDURE up to 12AM (midnight).
- Drink a large amount of liquids to avoid dehydration.
- Avoid red or orange colored liquids.
- Avoid any food or drink that is solid, soft, pureed, pulp, or “milky.”
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages.
- Nothing by mouth should be taken after 12AM (MIDNIGHT) the NIGHT BEFORE the procedure.
“Clear liquids” examples:
- Clear broth or bouillon (without noodles or solids)
- Clear: Soft Drinks, Kool-Aid, Gatorade, Lemonade
- Popsicles (No ice cream or yogurt bars)
- Tea (No milk or cream)
- Jell-O (No red or orange)
- Any juices without pulp (No orange juice)
Morning of Procedure:
- Administer 2 fleet enemas.
- Enemas can be purchased over the counter at any drug store.
- Administer the first enema, wait 15 minutes, and repeat with the second enema.
Patients who take Aspirin or Anti-Coagulants:
- Stop Aspirin or other non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications 7 days prior to the procedure.
- Stop Coumadin (Warfarin) or Plavix (Clopidogrel) 7 days prior to the procedure.
Patients with Diabetes:
- Consult with your primary doctor on how to modify diabetic medication or insulin injection.
On the Morning of Procedure Please Bring:
- Your current ID and insurance card.
- A list of your current medications, remedies, products, and allergies.
- A licensed driver to transport you to your home after the procedure. (Taxis are not allowed.)
