Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Prep Instructions

What Is Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used to see inside the sigmoid colon and rectum. Flexible sigmoidoscopy can detect inflamed tissue, abnormal growths, and ulcers. The procedure is used to look for early signs of cancer and can help doctors diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus, and weight loss.

How to Prepare for the Procedure:

  • Nothing by mouth should be taken after midnight.
  • Administer 2 fleet enemas on the morning of the exam, just before you go to the surgery center or hospital.

Instructions for Administering Enemas:

  • Administer enemas (rectally) 1 hour before coming to the office.
  • Administer enemas 20 minutes apart and hold each enema up to 10 minutes.
  • Enemas can be purchased over the counter at any drug store.

Notes & Precautions:

  • Please inform your physician if you are taking any anticoagulants.
  • No aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications should be taken one week prior to the procedure, especially Coumadin.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

On the Morning of Procedure, Please Bring:

  2. A list of your current medications, remedies, products, and allergies
