Your Comfort Comes First

Gastroscopy (EGD) Prep Instructions

What Is an EGD Procedure?

  • After gargling or spraying your pharynx with a local anesthetic (to prevent gagging) and after receiving a mild sedative, you are asked to swallow a small flexible tube through which the doctor can see inside the stomach, take photos, collect fluids, or remove tiny bits of tissue (biopsies).
  • This exam is particularly useful for identifying causes of upper abdominal pain.

Before the Procedure:

  • Nothing by mouth should be taken after midnight of the night before the procedure.

Patients who take Aspirin or Anti-Coagulants:

  • Stop Aspirin or other non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications for 7 days prior to the procedure.
  • Stop Coumadin (Warfarin) or Plavix (Clopidogrel) 7 days prior to the procedure.

Patients with Diabetes:

  • Consult with your primary doctor on how to modify diabetic medication or insulin injection.

On the Morning of Procedure Please Bring:

  1. Your current ID and insurance card.
  2. A licensed driver to drive you home. Your procedure will be cancelled if you do not have a designated driver.
